MY SOUL TO KEEP by Rie McGahaCALEN-MY SOUL TO KEEP was just released from Noble Romance Publishing! About the book:After having witnessed the brutal rape and murder of his mother, and the murder of his father, three-year-old Arion is found by brothers Calen and Caleb MacLean of the Clan MacLean. The brothers bury the boys' parents and take him back to their castle home to be cared for by their Aunt Margaret, who has lived with them since their own mother, and Margaret's sister, passed away when Caleb was just an infant. Their father, William, Laird MacLean, sends his sons on a quest to find the murderers, with a small diamond as their only clue to the identity of the men who had committed the atrocities. When they come up empty-handed and Calen begins having strange dreams, he sets out alone to find the answers he needs. Led by the beckoning of the woman in his dreams, he climbs the Mackinaw Mountains and discovers a secret community known as The Fortress by its all-female inhabitants who reveal themselves as being witches. Their leader, Ariella, has secrets that have been hidden in the mountains for thousands of years. And when Calen discovers that the woman in his dreams is very real, he falls madly in love with the ethereally beautiful Arianna, and she with him. But the women of The Fortress have secrets that will not only lead to the identity of an evil man named Damon, but will also lead Calen to discover secrets about himself and his family. Excerpt:The men who had been swimming hauled themselves up on the riverbankand lay back exhausted. Calen decided to take a bath himself and walked a ways upriver. He stripped naked and dove into the water. He came quickly to the surface and sucked in the breath he'd been robbed of by the shock of the cold water. He adjusted quickly to the temperature and swam slowly across the expanse, the muscles in his back and shoulders bunching and rippling with every stroke. He swam back to the riverbank, climbed out of the water and dressed. It was nearly full dark now and time to sleep, but Calen took the first watch and sat with his back to a boulder while the men lay down. He needed time to think. Something nagged at the back of his mind, something important that was just out of reach, but he knew it would come to him eventually."Your turn," Calen said a few hours later. He kicked Edwin's boots. They'd known each other all of their lives and even after beating each other bloody on more than one occasion over a lass or two, they were still best friends.Edwin scrubbed his hands over his face and scrambled to his feet as Calen took his place on the pallet and fell instantly asleep. The fire rose in the dark, casting its light in a wide circle. The woman stood with her hands raised over her head, her back arched and her face tilted toward the moonless sky. Only a backdrop of black velvet covered in stars glittering like diamonds lay overhead. She chanted in a language strange to his ears while her body swayed rhythmically. Blue, red and yellow sparks shot from the fire. The wind gusted and blew her long hair back, while her sheer gown billowed around her. He was mesmerized, enchanted, aroused. He remained in the shadows, wanting her, but not wanting to intrude. Suddenly, all went still and she looked directly at him. Though he remained hidden, he sensed she knew he was there. She began walking toward him, but stayed within the circle of light cast by the fire."Come," she whispered. He stood frozen in place."Come to me," she whispered again. He remained where he was."When you are ready to know, come to me."Calen bolted upright, ready for action, but nothing stirred. A dream, he thought, his eyes growing accustomed to the darkness. Though it was not quite dawn, he rose and whistled. Another friend, and comrade in arms, Dandrick, was standing guard and came into view."What is it?" the man whispered, glancing around the camp."Nothing, we're returning to the keep."
